We thought it would be a fun thing that our friends would come to, and it turned out to be enormously popular. First Wednesday of every month, we would have a writer of some note that we would interview along with a live band, and we charged 20 bucks a head. My producer, David Andreone, and I are fans of ‘Inside the Actors Studio,’ but we always thought, how cool would it be if you could do that show but with writers and in a nightclub with a live band and everybody was drunk? So we began by first doing it as a live show at the DBA in West Hollywood. How did you come up with the idea for the talk show? The silver is first upgraded in an oxygen converter and then refined by electrolysis. Over the years the Mint had used different processes to recover and sell the silver often found in unrefined gold, but, in 2006, the Mint opened a new, state-of-the-art silver refinery that finally allowed it to refine silver. Today's process is a combination of chlorination and electrolysis. Since then, the Mint's refinery has undergone several changes and expansions. This method proved to be too time-consuming and in 1915 the Mint introduced a new chlorination process developed in Australia to reduce processing times and increase the Mint's gold refining capacity. Three years later the Mint began refining gold by electrolysis in its assay department. When the facility first opened, it had 61 employees. The first coin struck was a 50-cent piece. ĭuring a short ceremony, Lord Grey and his wife, Lady Grey, activated the presses for the Canadian Mint on January 2, 1908, officially opening the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint. As a result, a branch of the Royal Mint was authorized to be built in Ottawa in 1901 after being first proposed in 1890. If you miss a day or don’t finish a story, move on.StoryADay is a little different from NaNoWriMo and NaPoWriMo in that it focuses on completing a short story every day, rather than ending the month with a certain number of stories or a specific word count. What about short stories? That’s in May and/or September (or whenever you want!), and it’s called StoryADay. So we’ve got novel-writing in November and poetry in April. Some writers share their NaPoWriMo poems on their websites or via social media, and help spread their love of poetry while showing off their ability to complete the challenge. Independently organized, NaPoWriMo is much smaller than NaNoWriMo, so don’t expect your local library to organize NaPoWriMo nights - unless, of course, you want to organize one on your own! You’ll have access to daily prompts to help your creative juices flow, but you’re welcome to ignore ‘em, too. National Poetry Writing Month takes place every April, and challenges writers to pen 30 poems in 30 days. If NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month, I bet you can guess what NaPoWriMo stands for. Hosted annually in April and July, you can set your own writing goal and work on any writing project, novel or not. If you’re looking for a similar option, check out Camp NaNoWriMo to experience a writing adventure that offers more flexibility. To have the best chance of following in their footsteps, have a through understanding of the rules of NaNoWriMo as well as precisely what you want to get from the experience. Several writers have published novels they initially drafted during NaNoWriMo, including Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants and Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus. You’ll need to write about 1,667 words every day to hit this target novel word count, but you won’t be alone the online NaNoWriMo community helps you track and share your progress while awarding badges for hard work and providing inspiration through interviews with well-known writers and other motivational tools. The length makes it a short novel (about the length of The Great Gatsby ).” What’s special about 50,000 words? As NaNoWriMo’s organizers explain : “Our experiences since 1999 show that 50,000 is a difficult but doable goal, even for people with full-time jobs and children. During NaNoWriMo, writers around the world challenge themselves to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. This is the one you’ve probably heard of: NaNoWriMo, which stands for National Novel Writing Month, has been an annual November tradition since 1999. Here are nine writing challenges to explore. But I think seeing that the “swap” really isn’t any such thing motivates the idea that there should be no reason to bar it. Which works out to being the same as “allowing” the “swap,” and since you usually tabulate gestalt characters’ levels so you can try to keep track of your class level in each, the “swap” will appear to be in the table. In this sense, there isn’t really any “swap” going on in the first place. And since neither class in a gestalt is in any way “primary,” it’s clear that a warblade//warshaper and a warshaper//warblade are the same thing. This matches the way the actual gestalt rules are worded, where it describes how you combine two classes together to form a single level. What you actually have here is a level of LA//warblade, then three levels of RHD//warblade, then three levels of RHD//warshaper, and finally two levels of warblade//warshaper. You don’t really have one side of LA +1/6 RHD/+2 warshaper and another side of 4th-level warblade/3rd-level warshaper/+2 warblade. Personally, though, I think it is best to not see gestalt as “sides,” because that’s not really what the rules describe. And maybe there’s some room for push-back even if it is the DM, if they are under the impression this is “the rule” and that’s the only reason they’re implementing it. In such a case, it may be worthwhile to check with this DM for this game. Now, if it’s a fellow player making this proclamation, they may have simply gotten the wrong impression that this is “an official rule” from a ruling from some other DM in some other game. But this is part and parcel of the process of implementing a variant idea: the DM has to massage the ideas that Unearthed Arcana presents into something that is actually a fully realized and implemented rule. No rule says that, though the reasoning behind dual-advancement prestige classes might be generalized to make an argument in favor of such a ban. I have also played in games that banned swapping which side a class is on. In my own games, I just ban RHD and LA altogether, in general, but also particularly for gestalt-neither ruling suits me. It’s not clear that those should go on “one side” as you have done-I have played in games that have ruled that LA is applied “before” the entire gestalt business, so it adjusts both sides. That means they always require some DM judgment and adjudication to implement, because they are ultimately not always complete.įor example, the gestalt rules never explain how to handle RHD and LA. Most importantly, they are often closer to ideas for how to vary your game, than they are fully-fledged and edited rules. Some of them were written by Wizards of the Coast staff, others were published elsewhere as open content, and so on. The gestalt rules come from Unearthed Arcana, a collection of open-content variant ideas that Wizards of the Coast threw together and called a book. If my explanation didn't make sense, I put down a visual aid below this: Is this a rule in the gestalt ruleset, or is it a houserule? Also, what specific book or books were gestalt rules introduced in? I looked in PHB1&2 as well as the DMG1&2. I cannot find any such restriction on the d20SRD page, and I can also not find the source book for gestalt rules. This is where I need help because at this point, I started to progress Warblade and Warshaper at the same time, which I was told I could not do, as you can not move the side a gestalt class is on. We had down how our characters were going to progress and for the next 2 levels, I put 2 more levels of Warshaper and the other side had 2 more levels of Weretiger. On the other I put the LA of the weretiger, and 4 levels of the Weretiger class. On one side of my Gestalt, I put 4 levels of Warblade and 1 level of Warshaper. I chose a water orc (0 LA) with the natural lycanthrope template, Weretiger version (3LA normally, 1 with the rules. We are level 5 gestalt with 2 free LA (as in if you have a race or template with LA, you can get up to 2 total of them for free. The Fall from Heaven mod team stopped development on the main branch of Fall from Heaven 2 in December 2008. Soren Johnson, the legendary designer behind Civilization IV, also gave Kael, encouragement, and advice on the engine. The mod received extensive media coverage, even being featured in print articles of PC Gamer but many of those reviews are now defunct, and can no longer be accessed. “Ice” – Covers the scenarios and the Illian civilization.“Shadow” – Introduces quests, equipment, and the Sidar and Svartalfar civilizations.“Fire” – Introduces Armageddon and the Mercurians (Angelic) and Infernal (Demonic) civilizations.“Light” – Covers the spell system and introduction of 16 distinct civilizations. The mod changed so much about the game that the team broke up development into separate projects: The mod team began with six members before expanding to 14 after Beyond the Sword was released. While that provided the background lore for the world, the mod team continually looked to update different aspects of the game’s setting. DevelopmentĪccording to Kael the Fall From Heaven universe was based on a long-running Dungeons & Dragons game. The amazing thing about the Age of Ice is that since the original was so impressive that this scenario was packaged with Civilization IV Beyond the Sword. Perhaps the final piece could be there? You must find out!” Introduction to Age of Ice Finally, legend speaks of an island that is untouched by the snow or ice. One piece lies with the Doviello, Mulcarn’s followers. The former sorcerer-ruler of Patria, Kylorin, reawakened by the goddess Nantosuelta, has risen to the challenge and seeks the three pieces of the Godslayer that were broken apart before the inter-deity war. However, there is a sword called the Godslayer, which, as implied by its name, can kill a god, and, in this case, Mulcarn. Mulcarn started another Ice Age and thus threw man into mere tribes. Because of a pact signed between the gods and humans, civilization could not rise again. Eventually, Mulcarn triumphed, and man’s former ally, fire, turned against them. “Age of Ice speaks of the fall of man in a large war between mythical gods, namely the God of Nature, Sucellus, and the God of Ice, Mulcarn. Here’s a short primer on Age of Ice for set up: It expanded why I thought Civ IV could possibly be and basically made it a whole new game. The deep lore the mods have is one of the main draws to them, so if you have no interest in learning the history and abilities of fantasy races then these mods likely aren’t for you.Īge of Ice was my introduction to Fall From Heaven and will always have special place in my heart. The Age of Ice has ended, what is left of the once great empires of man have formed into small tribes, ready to rebuild and retake that which was lost.īoth Age of Ice and the sequel are heavy on lore. While the Illians and Doviello ar played by the AI due to scripted events that take place. These factions are the: Illians, Doviello, Amurites, and Barbarians.Īge of Ice is a single scripted scenario where only the Amurites are playable. Age of Ice featured only four Civs (Compared to 21 in Fall 2). There is also a prequel called Fall from Heaven: Age of Ice that was also released for Civ IV: Beyond the Sword. The mod was first released for base Civ IV in 2005 but included fewer races and less unique mechanics. It was re-released as the far more popular Fall From Heaven 2 for the Beyond the Sword expansion. The mod changes tons about Civilization IV including adding all-new races, a magic system, and an “Armageddon Counter, among other things. The mod was developed by Kael, whose real name is Derek Paxton, and who went on to develop the Elemental: Fallen Enchantress game with Stardock.įall From Heaven 2 is probably the most successful successor to Master of Magic, the highly beloved 90’s Fantasy 4X that has spawned a bunch of mediocre successors.įall From Heaven successfully captures the chaotic and mysterious nature of Master of Magic while going completely its own way in terms of design and atmosphere. It is still to this day the most popular mod for Civilization IV in terms of downloads due to the massive changes it makes to almost everything about Civ IV. Fall From Heaven 2 for Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword is one of those mods.įall from Heaven 2 abandons the historical setting of the base game for the dark fantasy world of Erebus.
